The Longing

As Summer's breeze
Cools into Fall
Like leaves from trees
Before me sprawled

And in my eyes
A tapestry
Both truth and lies
Wove maserfully

In each of these
You still reside
A presence felt
Still at my side

Where 'er you go
My heart goes too
Though distant paths
From those we knew

Throughout my years
Love, lovers and friends
Too well I know
This longing never ends

You get it.  I know you do.  Still...

Saying Goodbye; Saying Hello

Saying goodbye
It is tough when some things pass
As tear drops leave my eyes
And steal my will to laugh

I know that things work out
They always find a way
Choking back my doubt
Embrace the coming day

Saying hello
Rejoice in something new
Bask in dawn’s warm glow
This dear love is true

A new day has begun
And still within my heart
Though new songs must be sung
You have colored every part

A New Decade, never forgetting those things and people who have passed from us.  Remembering the joy we felt and even those things that did not go as planned; we survive and triumph.  I thank God for all that has touched me and made me who I am.

In Plain Sight

I keep looking around, trying to find something.
I know it is here somewhere...
Then I realize...
It is right here...
All that I need is with me and has always been there...
Amazing

'Nuff said

Love

"Love transcends location and situation"
As I wrote I knew that it was true
I said this to another friend
It struck me out of the blue

No matter where you go my love
Nor what we say or do
The simple fact is all my life
Has has led to something new

I know right now the circumstance
Has split our paths in two
But surely as the winds do dance
They'll blow me back to you

Life does not often bend to our will. More often than not we are the ones doing the bending. I believe that there is a purpose, a guiding hand, that weaves the tapestry of our lives. I know that those same hands will guide us in the right direction if we will only let them.

Emerging from Sorrow

All at once it strikes
No matter how well you have girded yourself
You can't avoid the spikes
And all your defenses and joy are put upon the shelf

The weight of the things around you
Responsibilities, duties, promises
All these things accost and pierce right through
And you retreat as if in some spiritual demise

Then you remember, real success is not based on how little you fall
But how often you rise again
At the end of the siege you are standing tall
And you face your life and sing a new refrain

You are the person you believe you are
Nobel, loving, courageous, and strong
You can survive the journey no matter how far
I have valor, I am worthy, I AM; this, this is my victory

There are times when I feel so completely out of control. Just when I think I have everything in order, a series of events come along to try and destroy my world. I retreat, regroup, and redouble my resolve. I will not fade away into some dark oblivion, I will shine.

He is Risen!

He is Risen! He is Risen!
All our sin has been forgiven
Glorious day of victory
Won by love’s sweet majesty

Let us always be grateful
Our Lord God has been faithful
For today and forever
Lift our hands up together

Sing out! Sing out!
Raise your voice and shout!
Life everlasting
No more sacrifice nor fasting

The price for us is paid
Our holiness is made
For us and our salvation
For every creed and every nation

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Today let us celebrate with one voice
The hope of man
Risen and triumphant again!

Death has been defeated
Evil’s thrall has retreated
Because of God’s perfect son
This battle has been won

Today is Easter Sunday. I sat here reflecting on what that means. I am no hypocrite; I am far from a perfect person. I do not expect to see perfection in others. I just wanted to give a voice of thanks, to the one who did die and rise perfectly for us and for our salvation. Through that sacrifice we are ALL made perfect and clean.

A Day Like Any Other

I awoke today
Drank my coffee
Drove the same road
Saw before me
Blue skies

I felt emancipation
A freedom unexplainable
Knowledge of my place
This universe embraces me
Riches all around me

In my heart
A gratitude grew
A certain clarity of purpose
Supernatural, exhaultation
Command, believe, accept

I am master
I am creator
I am beauty
I am perfected
I am God's will

A certain druid constantly reminds me that these are the truths that we are born to. This is my affirmation of these facts and my thanks for those who hold me to this course.

My Brother José

Time has passed
So little changed
You raised the call
In freedom’s name

That call rings still
It guides our path
It gives us strength
Against the wrath

Of those who would
Seek to enslave
The truth and rights
All people crave

They took your life
But could not see
The blood they shed
Fed liberty

You are alive
Inside our heart
We pledge to you
To do our part

The task is ours
To lead by choice
Fight for the weak
And give them voice

We must shout out
And lift our hands
Again it’s time
To take a stand

Honor and courage
Must win the day
We owe you this
My brother José

This poem is dedicated to two of my heroes, men who were not afraid to stand against tyrany, men who loved liberty. These two great men, their writings and sacrifices have inspired my own walk. In Loving memory, Rest in Peace José Martí of Cuba (José Julián Martí Pérez January 28, 1853–May 19, 1895) and Dr. José Rizal of the Philippines (Dr. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896)

Thief

You came in the guise of a friend
You stole from me innocence and peace
You tricked me, lied to me
You stole without regard for consequence
.
You lived as a specter in my life
You hid in every shadow
Stalking me, chiding me
Dark whispers like a thousand darts
.
Now the thief has come for you
Stolen your health
Stolen your youth
You are laid bare
.
You died today
Your broken and decayed flesh failed you
That which you tried to take from me, denied
You died and I feel only sadness
.
I forgive you
Good night, find peace
Sleep now
You steal from me no more
.

Years ago something was stolen from me. Something I hid in my shame for years. I recently learned the thief died. Good bye, good journey, I am free...

She

It is for she
Who spoke the world into being
and breathed life into it's lungs

It is for she
who was expected to stay
and chose to find her own way

It is for she
who carried the immaculate hope of the world
bore and nurtured him
for our death and resurrection

It is for she
who sacrificed her dreams
and ensured our own

It is for she
who made us men
and with a word or glance emasculated us

It is for she
who has shown me all I desire
and may not have

It is for she
who is worthy of praise and scorn
that I offer these humble prose

Women, they are God's most beautiful and terrible creation. They bear the future in their womb and drive men into their tomb. All Praise the creator for their existence.

In Gratitude

How do I express my thanks?
My protector, my guide
Not worthy of your ranks
You’ve never left my side

How to praise your name?
Humility, love, and strength
Never sought for fame
My words can’t span the length

How can I? Denying self
I can only glorify, magnify
I once broken, brought to wealth
Allowed to linger at your side

How do I capitulate?
Before your throne
I weep in gratitude, fall prostrate
Chilled to the very bone

How to honor the King?
No treasure, no worthiness
No nobility do I bring
Sufficient for your holiness

How can I repay?
Tis my folly. By your grace
Your death, you paid
This alone secured my place

At the very heart of my existence has been a single theme "grace". I have lived a life that could easily have seen me dead or incarcerated. I believe that the lord Jesus Christ has been faithful to protect and guide me from the certain death that I once called my life. I hope that, reading this, people will reflect and give thought to that which sustains them.

My Medicine Bag

Through swirling smoke
Hear mystic drum
From peace pipe toke
And music strum

Greenish sin
Or shredded swag
I reach within
My medicine bag

Powdered cure
Venom of snake
Stomped or pure
The chance I take

Though bitter sweet
I choke and gag
Seek self-deceit
My medicine bag

The shaman speaks
And lifts his hands
The dreamer walks
Through scorching sands

Staff or crutch
Joyous and sad
I can escape
My medicine bag

Addiction like soured love is hard to escape. It beckons, restless, compulsion to a weary soul. Escape requires removal and, too easily revisited is this mistress. Destructive satisfaction, wanton desires. Again and again returning till one day it is enough and the lesson is learned. When the price is paid, hopefully emerges a freed slave.
